Extremely changeable conditions on Lake Bonney on Saturday  made huge demands on sailors involved in the second heat of the club championships with Mosquito yachts in particular having a tough time of it.
In the main southerly winds prevailed of some 12 knots but one particularly violent gust caused havoc in the fleet as it approached the buoy in the Eastern corner of the lake.
Four yachts capsized with Kim Tonkin on his NS14 having the mast stuck in mud and needing the assistance of a jet ski rider to right the yacht.
In the Mosquitoes Steve Thomas with “Just Do It” and Mark Pfennig with “Matrix” capsized but quickly regained control to finish the race but Peter Dunk and Kirsten Thomas with “Splashes Of Brilliance” were less fortunate as they snapped a mast in the wind shift and needed the aid of the LBYC Safety Boat to get back to the clubhouse.
Results of the race were Robin Bawden with “Merlin” first ahead of fellow Paper Tiger yacht “Talisman” sailed by John Eshman with Steve Thomas and “Just Do It” third.
Sail Training recommenced on Saturday and will continue this week Saturday 23rd November at 10am–all interested seniors or juniors are welcome.
This Saturday`s racing is Handicap Race B2.
