Riverland won two SA Country Basketball titles when the Under 12 and Under 16 championships were held in Adelaide last weekend.
With their Grand Finals only an hour or so apart the Under 12 Girls Division One and Under 16 Girls Division One teams both won their competitions.
In Under 12 Division One Riverland 40 defeated Mount Gambier 10, Port Augusta 45-25 and Naracoorte 52-7 in preliminary matches and then won its Quarter Final 41-13 against Millicent and Semi Final 38-30 from Yorke Valley. In the Grand Final it defeated Port Augusta by 12 points.
The Under 16 Division One Girls went down to Mount Gambier 36-46 first up then rounded out its early games with three victories 58-40 from Broken Hill, 39-31 against Strathalbyn and 80-19 from Eastern Hills. It then won its Semi Final 49-43 over Mildura and completed a tough campaign by winning a superb Grand Final 50-48 against Mount Gambier, a reversal of its first game.
A Riverland Official said “the girls played their hearts out in the Grand Final and every one of them played well. Portia Size, who won the Sally Jane Allen as the Best and Fairest Player in the Division One Girls’ tournament, and Abbey Siviour were absolutely outstanding”.
He believed the two Division One Championships could even be a “best ever’ tesult.
In Under 12 Boys Division One the team worked hard to improve as the competition progressed. First up it lost to Great Southern 22-52 and then to Port Augusta 22-42 but it was really competitive against Mount Gambier going down 45-48 and against Murray Bridge 39-47 in a quarter final.
In Under 12 Boys Division Three Strathalbyn defeated Riverland 22-20, Riverland won 29-15 over Mildura, and Willunga 36 beat Riverland 19. Naracoorte won a quarter final 31-22 from Riverland.
There was also a local team in Division Five of Under 12 Boys. Riverland won its opening two matches 37-12 from Broken Hill and 24-23 in a thriller against Millicent and then lost 18-23 to Mount Gambier and 18-23 to Roxby Downs.
Riverland reached the semi finals in Under 16 Boys Divisions 1/2. It lost to Mildura 18-55, to Bordertown in a cliffhanger 33-35 and 31-55 to Great Southern.
In a quarter final it defeated Port Lincoln 39-35 before being defeated by Mildura team 2 51-36 in a semi final.
