Round two of the Riverland Hocket season was full of close games again.
Last Friday night at Glassey Park Berri`s 2014 A Grade Women`s premiership team went on its winning way defeating Renmark 3-0. In the first half Ally Giles and Laura Strout made some good runs through the middle for Renmark but ran into a very strong opposition backline. Berri had come out strong however and controlled most of the play to be 2-0 up at half time. There were a number of eye catching near misses by both sides in the closing stages but with Naomi Weatherald with 2 goals best afield and Emma Cuteri and Charlotte Dominic (1 goal) also prominent Berri went on to win. For Renmark Brianna Glekas, Sharon Pendle and Rebecca Keynes were named best.
In the Men`s match it was desperate, fast anf furious throughout and despite a number of near misses from both teams, low scoring. In fact Renmark`s goal from Dan Shawyer eight minutes from half time gave his team a 1-0 victory. Neither side ranked best players–it was that type of clash with a lot of players contributing to the arm wrestle.
On Saturday a full day of hockey was played on grass at Waikerie. In the A Women`s game the home side put Loxton under pressure immediately and finally a goal to Lisa Redemski came as a reward. Loxton retaliated and for a time the game became a stalemate with both contestants missing chances to score. Loxton`s Louise Smith and Billie Jo Hammerstein against Waikerie`s Lori Hocking and Emma Vallelonga was line ball in the midfield but a burst of energy from the visitor created some cracks in the Waikerie defence and right on half time Amanda Schubert tied up the scores. The midfield battle continued in the second half and both teams took turns at being on top but with the hectic contest seeing players tire scoring chances dropped away and the game ended as a 1-1 draw. Best players for Waikerie were Lori Hocking, Emma Vallelonga and Miriam Kroehn and for Loxton Louise Smith, BJ Hammerstein and Samantha Pearn. In the Men`s clash it was Loxton that applied the early pressure but the Waikerie defence stood firm and only a goal from a penalty stroke to Loxton star Tim Pannell bothered the scorers up until half time. The Waikerie defence continued to stand up to the Loxton bombardment after half time and out of a keen midfield battle James Smith suddenly evened the score for Waikerie when he sneaked cleverly past Loxton keeper Daniel Schubert. Spurred into action Nathan Fielke and Tim Pannell in particular lifted for Loxton and it was a second Pannell goal that gave his side the win in a tight contest 2-1. Pannell, Ryan Hentschke and Fielke were outstanding for Loxton and Clayton Hollamby, Lachlan Seabrook and Mitchell Kleemann for the home side.
