At Barmera Bowling Club today, Sunday 26th February, the Preliminary Finals in Divisions One and Two of “Saturday” Pennant Bowls will be held.
At Loxton the Semi Finals, the Second between Loxton Gold and Waikerie Blue, and knock out First between Berri Red and Waikerie Gold will also be decided for Division Three.
In yesterday’s Division One Second Semi Final Berri continued its unbeaten run at its new home stronghold but the minor premier did not have it all its own way against Renmark. Andrew Hill’s rink won 29-16 against Sean Leesue, Andy Gapco won 21-14 over Chris Karantonis, Mark Kubank went down to Bill Dopson 10-29 and Dennis Treloar defeated Rick Stoeckel 23-12. For the Kubank four it was its second defeat in a row after being unbeaten up until the final minor round game.
Waikerie meanwhile won the First Semi Final 85-64 against Renmark RSL. It brought about the end of a sensational effort from Renmark RSL that saw it surge from the lower end of the table to reach the major round. Barry Harden for Waikerie led his four to a 21-16 win against Ron Adam, Andrew Fulwood defeated Malcolm Inglis 23-15, Wayne Collins lost to David Wilson 18-20 and Brian Burnett won 23-13 against John Van Der Wyst.
Therefore in today’s Preliminary Final Renmark will play Waikerie. Talking to local bowls authority ‘Dixie’ Lee this morning he feels the Barmera synthetic greens, probably the best in the association, will suit Renmark more than Waikerie. Renmark also leads in the win-loss score 2-1 over the season, strangely winning with the final bowl 73-71 at Waikerie in round two, losing at home 76-85 in round 9 and winning away at Waikerie again in round 16 94-76. Despite all of that Dixie feels that Waikerie, after being ejected out of the double chance spot at the 11th hour can win today and advance to the Grand Final against Berri. It is a gut feeling after talking to people at each club. Dixie was not surprised that Berri had defeated Renmark at Berri but was surprised that Renmark had got so close. He said that Berri on its new greens was a real challenge for visitors but that its away form had not measured up th the dominance of previous season. “The Grand Final at the grass greens at Renmark RSL could result in a close game then ” he said. “Something like when Renmark RSL won there against Berri 72-69 in round 12.”
In Saturday’s Division Two 2nd Semi Final Waikerie (W Haby 25, M Boehm 11, N Harcombe 21) won 57-50 against Berri (L Knight 18, A Kosturjak 22, J Cresp 10) and in the First Semi Final Monash (I Potts 24, P Brennan 23, M Voigt 18) won 65-43 over Loxton (D Thomson 11, J Willett 11, G Wachtel 21). Berri will play Monash today in the Preliminary Final.
Division Three, with its six team major round, Elimination Finals yesterday. Waikerie Gold, with K Morley’s rink defeating J Bradford 16-10, F King – K Tanner 24-10 and D Boehm – B Bland 24-15 won 64-35 against Berri Blue and Berri Red (L Seltitzas 14, J Centofanti 19, L Facci 23) beat Renmark (C Eagle 22, S Hume 17, R Schulz 15) in a close call 56-54.
