With one of those kicks that begged the question ‘was in before or after the final siren?’ Riverland defeated Barossa Light and Gawler by five points, 10-5 (65) to 9-6 (60) in an interleague clash at Waikerie on Saturday.
Even one prominent Riverland official said after the game “it was a terrific game of quality football and a draw would have been a fitting result”.
Riverland led 3-2 to 3-0 at quarter time but trailed 4-3 to 6-3 and 6-4 to 8-6 at the next two breaks before kicking 4-1 to 1-0 to clinch the win.
Goals for Riverland came from Matt Wutke 4, Dylan Elertheriadis 2 and Steve Burton, Jesse Bannister, Tristan Geehman, and Jack Albrecht 1 and for BL&G S Higgs, A Laverty 2, B Byrum, D Pilkington, R Kuh, J Freemon and A Byster 1.
Named as Best Players for Riverland were Nick Hankin, Matt Wutke, Tristan Geehman, Jack McKenzie, Liam Haynes, Riley Walter, and Steve Burton.
For BL&G J Wegener, Coomes, D Pilkington, H Jaunay, A Laverty and J Walsh all played well.
In an earlier Under 15 game Barossa Light and Gawler proved too strong for Riverland starting with a 5-0 to nil first term and going on to win 15-11 (101) to 3-1 (19).
For the visitor M Norton and R Hoklas scored 3 goals, H Eeles, T Taylor, J Johnson each 2 and J Pope, J McLennon, R Argent 1 and better players included R Hoklas, H Eeles, P Mudge, B Pilkington, J McLennon and R Montgomerie.
