Matt Benson won the three lap Lyrup Time Trial when a good turnout took part in the event recently.
Benson recorded a time of 14 minutes 52 seconds followed by Lee Rasheed 17.24, Mick Gray 17.55, Glen O’Brien 18.15, Terry Bond 18-20, Ruth Strout 18.35, Clayton Bond 19.31, Peter Weston 19.58, Angelo Ylia 19.59 and Gordon Lawton 23.36.
It was then decided to hold a 10 Lap Handicap Race instead of a Graded Scratch. Ylia, Clayton Bond and Weston started off Limit, O’rien and Terry Bond from 5 minutes, Rasheed and Gray off 8 and Benson from Scratch.
As it turned out the challenge was in front of all of the chasing group as the Limit bunch worked extremely well together. Benson rode an outstanding race averaging 38kmph and rounded up the other groups with two laps to go however even he could not catch the front runners. O’Brien, Terry Bond, Rasheed and Gray in their groups also worked tirelessly but in the difficult conditions could not make much headway and finished much as they had started.
In the end it was the fresh legs of youngster Clayton Bond that were too strong as he attacked on the final straight to win comfortably by some 100 metres. The other Limit starters Weston and Ylia took out the minor placings with Benson a minute back and recording fastest time.
