In 2014 the Riverland Soccer Association lodged a successful bid to host the 2015 SA Country Championships and it was decided that the venue would be the newly developed grounds and club and change rooms at Barmera’s Bruce Oval. The event has been programmed for Saturday and Sunday August 22nd and 23rd.
However the venue has now been changed by the SA Junior Soccer Association to sporting grounds at Renmark.
The reason for the change is the inability of Barmera to provide the eight pitches required at the one venue with negotiations to have an eighth pitch at the Barmera Football Oval and remaining seven at Bruce Oval unacceptable to the SAJSA. A SAJSA delegation apparently visited the area and found an acceptable location at Renmark.
After carrying out a lot of preparatory work for the major event Barmera United has not only been inconvenienced but is naturally disappointed but officials across the RSA and its clubs have accepted the situation and are determined that the carnival will be hugely successful so that the Riverland remains in line to hold similar tournaments in the future.
It has been stressed that “this carnival is bigger than the Riverland and that we need to remember that the event is for our children”.
