Despite the extreme heat the Riverland Junior Carnival with its 43 teams is being played this weekend.

Local officials are to be congratulated on their hasty reorganisation in getting the matches into air conditioned stadiums during the hottest part of the day.

Earlier in the week cancellation of the event was being considered with a number of problems likely to have been created for people travelling from outside the area who had booked accommodation etc.

Meanwhile Waikerie Division One teams scored a winning double against Renmark in last Thursday night`s round of matches.

In the Women`s game it defeated Renmark 50-44. This was Renmark`s second defeat in a row after many people had almost considered it ‘past the premiership post’ a few weeks ago. Hannah Lehmann shot a brilliant 26 points for Waikerie with M Liu contributing 10 while for Renmark L Haynes 15 and A James 9 did best.

In the other Women`s match Berri with 18 points from Indee Thiele and 8 from Tory Brown defeated Barmera 37-24. Consistent juniors Annabel O`Dea 10 and Ashlee Wutke 6 led the way for Barmera.

In Division One Men Waikerie 49 won against Renmark 44 in a quality contest. Mitch White 27 points and Shaun Steele 12 were in great form for Waikerie while for Renmark reliable pair Josh Warnock 19 and Craig Seekamp 14 stood out.

Barmera, with 8 points each to brothers Dillon and Danny Millard, won 35-33 in a close finish against Berri. For Berri Nick Hankin with 11 points and L Hayes 7 were prominent.

In the other Women`s Divisions Supercats defeated Waikerie 36-24 and Allstars won 40-24 in Two and in Three Berri defeated Loxton 47-20 and Berri defeated Barmera 37-21.

In Division Two Men Loxton 49 beat Allstars 34, Renmark defeated Tigers 38-26 and Supercats won 44-28 over Waikerie and In Division Three Loxton 32 beat Waikerie 29 and Berri 41 accounted for Barmera 14.

The Riverland Junior Carnival also managed to start the Under 16 competitions on Friday night.

In Under 16 Boys Riverland No 1. 42 (Z Lueth 10, J Sinko 8, J Drake 8) won against Riverland No 2. 22 (S Kavlakoglu 10, K Curyer 6) and Riverland No 1. (D Vandergiessen 15, Z Lueth 9) won against Riverland No. 3 ( A Haynes 6, T Kent 6) 41-18.

In Under 16 Girls Riverland No. 1 28 (D Haynes 7, A Stephens 5) won against Riverland No. 2 16 (S Lawrence , S Lange 4 each).
