The demise of the Riverland Greyhound Club was a sad occasion but its long serving President Leo O`Leary had something to smile about this morning when he prepared to hand cheques for $6,500 to both St Catherines, Berri and Bonney Lodge, Barmera.
The funds became available after a final audit had been conducted of the RGRC finances.
The club has been wound up– which involved the disposal of some assets and arrangements with the Berri Barmera Council to utilise the modern clubrooms for other purposes.
The Barmera United Soccer Club now uses it as its head quarters.
Initially the Greyhound Racing Board had suggested any excess funds from the RGRC be lodged with them but the local committee had been adamant that any monies it was left with be directed to worthwhile causes here in the Riverland.
That was agreed and St Catherines and Bonney Lodge will now benefit.
Winding up the RGRC was a blow to the loyal band of people who supported the club both on and off the race track and also to the wider community that enjoyed ‘a day out at the greyhounds
But those people involved have acted extremely responsibly in closing the books despite their disappointment and deserve a pat on the back for a job well done.
