Ryan Goodes and Shaun Schaff from the Riverland Boxing and Fitness Club at Loxton will represent South Australia in a clash with Queensland at a tournament at the Magic Millions Stadium in Adelaide on Saturday June 8th and are matched against a couple of highly ranked opponents.
Shaun will be up against 69kg Queensland champion Liam Nicolson and Ryan will meet 60kg Queensland champion Isiaah Farr who fought in the last World championships.
Another boxer affiliated with the Loxton Gym, Stephen Finey, is also preparing for a challenge bout in Western Australia against 2013 silver medallist Ross Weaver in Perth during June. If Finey wins that bout he will have the opportunity to compete in the final with a trip to the elite World Championships later in the year up for grabs.
Riverland boxers have had a busy year so far.
Firstly Ryan Goodes and Shaun Schaff went to Sydney for a competition at the Fitness Expo in April.
All of their opponents were 2013 Australian Championship representatives.
Ryan initially went down to 2013 Australian champion Josh McKay (NSW) by one point but in a much improved performance won his next bout on points 10-3 against Luigi Greco (NSW).
Shaun defeated Youssef Dib first up on a countback then in the final had Callum Cassidy (WA) in all sorts of trouble in the latter stages but could not make up the points Cassidy had accumulated early.
Then last weekend, 18th May, it was back to Sydney with Schaaf and Finey in the Tszyu Academy Tournament.
Schaaf produced a tremendous effort to defeat a quality opponent in ACT`s Curtis Cooper in middle weight division 75kg, two weight categories above his normal division.
Finey lost to NSW`s Ned Kane on points with some surprise expressed that the judges awarded the decision to the home town boy. Nevertheless it was a top performance by Finey on his first interstate trip against an opponent that had lost to the eventual silver medallist at the 2013 Australian titles.
The two boxers had a good hit out on the final day with training/sparring sessions at the Tszyu Academy.
