Berri and Waikerie met in the 2015/16 season Saturday Pennant Bowls Division One Grand Final and Berri grabbed its seventh consecutive premiership.
It was considered one of the best Grand Finals ever with a great final bowl of the match by Berri skipper Andrew Hill reversing a two shot lead held by Waikerie.
Good judges in the game described Hill’s delivery as ‘the best bowl they had ever seen’.
Now the same two teams will face off in next Saturday’s 2016/17 Grand Final at the Renmark RSL Bowling Club.
Bowls authority ‘Dixie’ Lee got it right yesterday morning when asked about the Division One Preliminary Final later in the day. He acknowledged Renmark deserved to go into the clash with Waikerie with a 2-1 edge in results so far in the season and with perhaps the Barmera synthetic surface more suitable to its ‘game’. But Dixie still chose Waikerie to win. It was just not a guess he considered confidence and determination as factors when considering his verdict.
In the Preliminary Final Waikerie won 81-68 with Barry Harden’s rink losing to Bill Dopson 14-22, Brian Burnett going down to Chris Karantonis 11-20, Andrew Fulwood defeating Rick Stoeckel 28-14 and Wayne Collins beating Sean Leesue 28-12. It is interesting to note that Stoeckel and Leesue only returned as skippers late in the minor round after Renmark had been unchanged in that area all season.
In the Division Two Preliminary Final Monash continued to surge from the knock out First Semi Final to the premiership game in style defeating Berri three rinks to nil 83-38. P Brennan’s consistent rink defeated L Knight 30-10, I Potts won 26-18 against J Cresp and M Voigt 27-10 from A Kosturjak.
Waikerie will now meet Monash for the title at Renmark RSL on Saturday.
In the six team major round in Division Three Semi Finals were held. In the Second Semi Final Loxton Gold went straight to the Grand Final at Loxton RSL next Sunday when it defeated Waikerie Blue in a nailbiter 57-56. R Braddock won over J Strauss 21-17, P Vaughan lost to P Voigt 17-22 and J Vaughan defeated S Gannom 19-17. In the First Semi Final Berri Red had a big win in ending Waikerie Gold’s season 74-45. L Seltitzas’ rink beat D Boehm 29-10, J Centofanti won 24-13 against F King and L Facci 21-13 from K Morley.
Completing a full day of ‘must see’ Grand Finals in Divisions One and Two and a Preliminary Final at Renmark RSL in Division Three Waikerie Blue will meet Berri Red.
