The North Eastern men`s and women`s teams both won one and lost one of their opening two rounds of Bowls SA`s annual Country Round Robin tournaments in Adelaide yesterday.
In the Men`s event at the Marion club North East won its opening game against Fleurieu 3 rinks to 2, 90 to 66. Peter Gageler`s rink defeated Stephen Davidson 27-7, Mark Bloomfield won 21-11 from Les Carter, Chris Rule lost to Dwayne Stephenson 14-17, Mark Kubank defeated Paul Noble 18-16 and Wayne Collins lost to Danyl Steinwedel 10-15.
In the afternoom NE went down heavily to Upper North 66-109. Gageler lost to Peter Cousins 10-25, Bloomfield to Lachlan Bowman 10-22, Chris Rule defeated Graham Gerschwitz 24-18, Kubank lost to Todd Brand 12-17 and Collins to Neville Leue 10-27.
In the Women`s matches at Payneham, North Eastern lost its opening game against Eastern 63-78. Carol Shugg`s rink 9 lost to Sally McKechnie 12, Jocie Cooper defeated Ruth Cross 20-9, Lyn Teakle lost to Christine Keller 4-27, Sue Lloyd defeated Kay Windlebank 17-14 and Kerry Treloar lost to Helen Lindner 13-16.
North Eastern won the afternoon game 75 to 72 in a keen contest against Upper North. Carol Shugg defeated Maxine Northcott 14-12, Jocie Cooper 15 lost to Kathy Bowman 16, Lyn Teakle 17 defeated Helen Smith 11, Sue Lloyd won 18-17 against Pat Hannan and Kerry Treloar lost to Judy Underwood 11-16.
The results are not necessarily a drastic start to the competition for the North Eastern teamsas it was a very even start. In the Men`s section only Upper North and Yorke Peninsula and in the Women`s Eyre Peninsular won their two opening matches.
