Berri defeated Waikerie 85-72 in the grand final at Renmark RSL on Saturday to win its eighth First Division Saturday Bowls pennant in a row.

Berri played an interesting 2016/17 season, starting slowly but timing its run perfectly to sit in the minor premiership spot after 18 minor round matches  had been completed.

At home at Berri it disposed of Renmark in the second semi final to get a direct ticket to yesterday’s title decider.

For the second consecutive year Waikerie has ended up runner up.

Rinks were shared in the grand final but victories by Dennis Treloar 26-17 against Andrew Fulwood and Andrew Hill 25-16 against Wayne Collins were sufficient to give Berri the premiership by 13 shots. For Waikerie Barry Harden defeated Andy Gapco 19-18 and Brian Burnett won 20-16 from Mark Kubank.

In Second Division, also at Renmark RSL, Monash continued to surge and in the end finished right on top after defeating Waikerie 67-53. Monash finished third at the end of the minor round with 278 points well behind Waikerie on top with 402. Monash only entered the four at round 10 and in round 18 lost to its grand final opponent 52-80. P Brennan’s consistent group defeated N Harcombe 28-13, M Voigt won 18-11 against M Boehm and I Potta lost to W Haby 21-29.

In a full day at Renmark RSL the Third Division preliminary final was also played between Waikerie Blue and Berri Red. Berri Red is another side that started slowly but jumped into third position at round 12 and consistently showed it was a premiership chance. On Saturday it booked an appointment with Loxton Gold in the grand final next day when it defeated Waikerie Blue 57-47. L Seltitzas beat S Gannon 21-20, J Centofanti – P Voigt 17-10 and L Facci – J Strauss 19-17.
