Competing in four divisions depending on the enrolments at the schools 23 local Primary Schools took part in the SAPSASA Athletics Championships at Glossop High School on Tuesday 18th August.
Glossop High School again assisted Riverland SAPSASA in the running of the day including Lyn Sweeney and her Recreation and Sports Year 12 students acting as judges and marshalls for all of the events and other staff helping as well.
The winners in the various divisions were Loxton in Large Schools, Renmark North in Medium, Our Lady of the River (Berri) in Small, Moorook in Smaller. Loxton Primary was named as the Champion School.
Six records were broken on the day and another equalled.
—In Female 10 year old 800m Isabelle Cant (St Joseph, Renmark) ran 2.53.65 breaking the time set by Amy Stephens of Loxton North in 2011.
—Female 11 year old 800m saw Matilda Rothe of Renmark North set a time of 2.51.88 breaking Loxton Lutheran’s Jessie Wooldridge’s 2014 record.
—Ellen Alm of St Albert’s, Loxton, jumped 3.39m in the Female 10 year old Long Jump eclipsing Dalyce Jenner’s (Renmark West) distance of 2009.
—In the Female 11 year old Long Jump Connie Doupis (Barmera) covered 3.97m. Melissa Mitchell (St Joseph, Renmark) set the previous record in 2006.
—In the Female 11 year old Relay Barmera Primary’s 1.14.19 broke its own record.
—Male 12 year old 200m. Haidar Qamari (Renmark) ran 29.07 beating the 2009 time of Sabasti Paraskevopoulos of St Joseph’s, Renmark.
—In the 13 year old Male Shot Put Daniel Schmidt (Waikerie Lutheran) threw 10.73m. This equalled the Riverland Christian School’s Gary Abdulla’s throw of 2008.
From the day a Riverland SAPSASA Squad has been selected for the State Country Championships to be held at Santos Stadium, Adelaide, on Monday Septemer 21st. The Riverland will have four age groups and four track events, 100m, 200m, 800m, and relays and four field events shot put, high jump, discus and long jump.
